How to Handle Job Rejection and Keep Going
You applied for a job you were excited about. You prepared for the interview. Then you got the rejection email. The disappointment is real, and it is completely normal to feel frustrated. But how you handle rejection determines your career trajectory.
The Truth Nobody Tells You
Most successful people were rejected many times before landing their breakthrough. The normal ratio is applying to 10 to 15 jobs before receiving one offer. Some people apply to 50 or 100 positions. This is not failure — this is the reality of a competitive job market where companies receive hundreds of applications for a single position.
Do Not Take It Personally
Rejection does not mean you are not good enough. There might have been 200 applicants for the same role. Another candidate might have had one specific skill the company needed. The timing might not have been right. The company chose someone else — they did not reject you as a person.
Ask for Feedback
After receiving a rejection, send a polite email asking for feedback. Say something like: Thank you for your time. Could you share any feedback on how I could improve for future opportunities? This creates a positive impression and the company might contact you for a different role. The feedback itself helps you genuinely improve.
Improve Your CV After Every Rejection
Every rejection is an opportunity to review your CV. Are the keywords matching the job description? Is the format ATS-friendly? Are your experiences written as results rather than responsibilities? Small improvements can make a significant difference.
Take a Break But Do Not Go Backward
It is normal to feel discouraged. Take a day or two off. Talk to someone you trust. But then get back to applying. Giving up is the only real failure in a job search.
Every Rejection Brings You Closer to Acceptance
If you learn from each rejection and improve your approach, you are not standing still — you are progressing. Every no brings you closer to the yes that changes everything.
